“As the LORD of Armies lives, in whose presence I stand,… – 1 Kings 18.15, CSB
I promise you that whatever you’re facing, God can.
What do I mean by this?
When life’s uncertainties rage against you, causing you to question and worry about how things will turn out, leaving you buffeted by doubts that cause you to wonder if God can help, I want to remind you that God can.
Can he help you with the diagnosis that you just received?
Can he help you with your child who is sick?
Can he help you with your depression and anxiety?
Can he forgive you?
Can he help you forgive?
Can he help you heal from that event in your life that has left you filled with grief and fear?
Can he resurrect your marriage?
Can he help you during your seasons of wandering through spiritual deserts that leave you exhausted?
Can he meet you in your loneliness?
Can he handle the necessities of daily life?
Can he lead and guide you and yours into his next plans for you?
Can he bring your wayward child back into fellowship with him?
Can he hear you? Can he see you?
And I know this list can go on and on. Take your specific question that starts with, “Can he,” and include it if it wasn’t included above. But then take that question and these questions above and ask him by starting with, “Can you…” I promise you that God can. However, the certainty of knowing that God can does not begin with the results of his work. Remembering what God has done in the past helps us trust him with today and our tomorrows, but the results of his work are still not the starting place. Instead, we start with who God is. A reason for this is that God’s options and ways are limitless. He often works in ways that make no sense to us because his plans extend beyond merely making us comfortable with life. And even though his ways may not make sense or even frustrate us at times, we know he can accomplish his purposes because of who he is.
So let me remind you today: As the LORD of the Angel Armies lives, He can! The certainty of who God is and of his existence, the fact that he lives, should bring about certainty within you about what he can do.
God knows what he is doing. Our Sovereign God is alive and well and is with you as he unfolds his plans. He is not worried about how things will turn out, but that doesn’t mean that he is not concerned for you. He loves you. And because you know that he is your all-powerful Heavenly Father, trust him by “casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you” (1 Peter 5.7, CSB). And when you begin to lose heart because things seem beyond impossible, remember that the impossible is God’s playground, “for nothing will be impossible for God” (Luke 1.37, CSB).
He’s the God of the Angel Armies. As surely as he lives, he can. Trust him. Trust his promises. Leave it to him to decide when and how he will remain faithful to his word. And as you wait with anticipation, continue to hold on to this:
God can.
Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us—to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. – Ephesians 3.20-21, CSB
