…the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. – Romans 10.12, CSB
The context of this verse has nothing to do with earthly blessings. Instead, the context of this verse is the blessing of salvation for all people who surrender to Jesus by confessing his Lordship and believing in his resurrection.
This is the message of faith that we proclaim: 9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame, 12 since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. – Romans 10.8-13, CSB (emphasis added)
It’s when the beauty of the gospel dims that we should be concerned. It’s when the preciousness of our salvation, bought with the precious blood of Jesus, seems less valuable that we need to preach the gospel to ourselves as if we’ve never heard it. It’s when our walk with the Lord is solely based on more information and proofs without intimate relationship and inexpressible joy because of the value of being part of God’s kingdom that we need to be concerned. It’s when we desire the blessings of God more than the blessing of knowing God that we have exalted God’s blessings to the role of idols.
The greatest blessing that God has ever bestowed on us is himself. His forgiveness of our sins because of his grace toward us and love for us expressed in the cross of Christ far outweighs any earthly blessing that he could give. His constant presence with us, by his Holy Spirit, is an unmerited joy and comfort. Knowing that we are loved and cared for by God should leave us amazed. We get to know him and are known by him. We don’t deserve him. And yet, he desires us. We who have called on Jesus are richly blessed because we know and walk with God in the imputed righteousness of Jesus. As John Piper once said, “Christ is not only the means of our salvation, but He is also the treasure of our souls.”
God,
Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. – Psalm 73.25-26, CSB
Thank you for being the treasure of my soul.
