“Just like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand,…” – Jeremiah 18.6, CSB

It’s like God took Jeremiah on a field trip to the potter’s house. Jeremiah stood there and watched the potter working away at the wheel, molding and forming the clay into the jar that he saw in his own mind. No instructions to follow. Instead, a beautifully personal vision of what that lump of clay was supposed to look like. So the potter continued to turn the wheel at the perfect speed, applying the ideal pressure to the clay as he created his masterpiece.

“But the jar that he was making from the clay became flawed in the potter’s hand, so he made it into another jar, as it seemed right for him to do.” – Jeremiah 18.4, CSB (emphasis added).

“As it seemed right for him to do. “

The clay had no opinion. The clay was simply there, unable to do anything to help become what the potter envisioned. The clay simply was while the potter performed and accomplished his will.

Can I encourage you with this reminder?

You are in the good hands of the Potter. God knows what he has planned for you. He knows who he is forming you to be. He knows how much pressure is needed to mold you into the showpiece that he has planned for you. He knows how much pressure will be too much. So in his gracious and careful hands, he forms you more and more into the likeness of Jesus. And while the process is not always fun, it is always worth it. And in the end, we will be what he envisioned us to be.

So rest. Be still. Stop fighting against what the Lord is doing. He is doing everything as it seems right for him to do. You’re in very good hands.
